Harper blinked awake, trying to get his eyes to cooperate long enough to see what time it was. Seven o’clock. The sunlight filtering through his bedroom curtains said Monday morning had arrived in all its glaring reality.
The weekend had been a long blur of no sleep and children’s games. A sleepy smile spread across his face as Andrew crossed his mind. All day Sunday, he had chattered on about the new swing a local contractor had installed in the ward’s playroom. Then they’d all taken turns pushing him on it until he wore down enough to need a nap. The little sprite had stolen his heart just as surely as his uncle had.
Thinking of Andrew brought into sharp relief what he needed to do this morning. He’d already made certain of the details—now, he needed to implement his plan. Harper flung back the covers and headed for the bathroom. Once showered and dressed, Harper grabbed the phone with one hand and the chocolate milk from the fridge with the other.
Taking a long draw from the carton, he held a button on the keypad. Speed dial two.
“‘Lo?”
The perkiness of his best friend’s voice made Harper grin. “Need to talk to you.”
“Harp? Everything okay?”
“I’ve got a problem, and I think you can help.”
A long pause. “Swing on over.”
“Gimme fifteen. I’ll bring the coffee.” Harper hung up, whistling to his empty apartment. There wasn’t anything that stood in Lonnie’s way when he wanted something done. And Harper hoped like hell this wouldn’t be an exception.
He grabbed his coat, locking the door on the way out. Twenty minutes and one stop at Starbucks later, Harper stood in Lonnie’s living room, spilling the whole story about Pitt and New Orleans and Andrew, while Lonnie wore a path in the carpet around him. Harper kept rattling on and on, not giving Lonnie a chance to tell him that he’d lost his mind and needed psychiatric help.
Finally, Lonnie stopped pacing the floor and sank onto the plush couch beside him. Harper fell quiet and waited.
Lonnie took a deep breath and let his head fall back onto the couch cushion. “You’re certain you want to do this?”
“Yes.”
“Fine.” Lonnie lunged off the sofa to trap Harper in a tight grip, staring him down with fierce green eyes. “You’ll have to go through the testing to be certain you’re a match. We can do that this afternoon when I’m on shift. I’ll schedule it for Friday morning, six a.m. sharp.”
Harper nodded and grinned. “Let’s do this.”
